UNDERSTANDING THE SUNLIGHT SPECTRUM
Sunlight spectrum that reaches earth consists of Ultraviolet (UV) lOnm to 400nm, Visible Light (VL) 380nm to 780nm and Infrared 780nm to 1 mm (IR).
UV is the strongest and most harmful radiation to earth. UVC is fully blocked by the ozone layer, about 5 to 10% of UVB and almost 100% of UVA reach the earth. UVB has a shorter wavelength which only reaches the earth surface. UVA has the longest wavelength which can penetrate to the deep-sea level. UV rays cause sunburn, skin cancer, skin aging and eye damage, and can lower your body’s ability to fight off illness.
Visible Light is the light that we can see. VL generates almost 40% of the total solar energy which consists of the colours of the rainbow. Violet, Indigo and Blue light from 380nm to 420nm is the High Energy wavelength which is visible but harmful to human eyes.
Near-infrared Light from 780nm to 2500nm is generating almost 50% of total solar energy. Near-infrared is good for wound healing, cellular regeneration, antioxidant and support of metabolic processes. Lots of medical instruments used near-infrared light for treatment. For example, sauna and near-infrared therapy.
